Newham council has approved plans for two new buildings at Sugar House Island, which will bring a total of 64 homes and 478sqm flexible space for commercial use.
The new buildings occupy a central plot on the Island, located between Sugar House Lane and Chimney Walk; a pedestrianised vista with three retained historic chimneys. Work on this phase is set to begin in the second half of 2023.
The buildings are designed by architects CJCT with reference to the island’s heritage and keeping occupant wellbeing in mind. For example, the dual-aspect windows on most of the apartments give maximum access to natural light and a strong visual connection to rest of the island. Both buildings have communal rooftop terraces and several homes have their own private terrace too. All the apartments are intended for build-to-rent.
The first building, is made up of 30 apartments and two commercial units, ranging over four to six stories and fronts onto the pedestrianised Chimney Walk. It will also house the developments’ energy centre when complete. The second building will be made up of 36 residential apartments, spread over four to ten stories and will house a high quality cycle storage facility.
