Cold Islanders, a UK-based community initiative curating events for and with the Caribbean community, presents ‘Built by We’, a day of creativity, connection and celebration inspired by the gathering spots that have shaped community life across the borough.
Programme:
- 1–3pm: Textile Workshop with Designer Kris Thomas: Using punch needle, hand embroidery, and appliqué on calico, participants will create embroidered patches inspired by Caribbean spaces, memories, and rituals. These will later be combined into a large collaborative textile artwork, archived to preserve culture for future generations.
- 4–6pm: Film Screening & Panel Talk: Screenings of films exploring community spaces and Caribbean heritage, followed by a panel discussion with researchers, producers, and community members.
- 6:30–8:30pm: Lime & Reception: Wrap up the day with Caribbean vibes — food, drinks, a DJ set, and a photobooth hosted by photographer Takenya Holness.
- All Day: Archival Exhibition: Explore digitised photos and imagery celebrating Black community spaces.
🎟 Drop-ins are welcome for the exhibition and lime, but please RSVP for the workshop and film screening as spaces are limited. RSVP via Newham Heritage Month website.
