LOOKING BACK AT A LANDMARK YEAR AT SUGAR HOUSE ISLAND
It’s hard to believe that 2023 is nearly over, but what a year it has been on Sugar House Island, as we’ve welcomed new faces, reached important milestones, and hosted some fantastic events. Read on for just some of our highlights of the past twelve months…
We kicked off the New Year with some great news when, in January, Dentaprime joined the Island, opening its new state-of-the-art clinic at 1 Cooperage Yard. Dentaprime is the biggest dental implantology clinic in the UK, offering the most affordable rates. Its arrival put a smile on everyone’s face, bringing a brand-new service right to the doorsteps of our residents.
Going into February, we announced the completion of the structural elements of our newest phase of development, Chimney Walk. Launching to the public early next year, Chimney Walk will be home to a host of new office and education spaces ready to welcome more exciting businesses to the Island. Chimney Walk will also see the arrival of a range of new independent retailers, as well as the opening of a significant new public outdoor area for leisure and events at Sugar House Island.
Stepping into spring, in March we saw UD Music host the highly regarded ‘Industry Takeover 2023’ at The Talent House, a scheme aimed to equip young people with the tools they need to navigate the music industry. We saw a weeklong programme of music industry masterclasses, open mic events, writing workshops and opportunities to meet with industry experts such as TSB, the multi-platinum producer who has worked with artists such as J Hus and Dave. These events were a great opportunity to celebrate creativity, and to showcase and develop the brilliant local talent we are home to here on the Island.
We progressed into the summer months welcoming Create + Destroy to the Island in June, as it launched new studio space inside iconic refurbished Victorian warehouse, The Sugar House. The space is Create + Destroy’s third addition to its portfolio of bookable studio spaces which it hires out to performing artists, dancers and photographers.
In August, we said hello to Island favourite Sifat’s second business here, The Laundry Spot. Following the success of his convenience store, the Market, Sifat’s new venture offers dry cleaning services from shirts and dresses to bedding, as well as on-site repairs and alterations. The opening provides Sugar House Island residents with another great amenity, and we are proud to be supporting our resident entrepreneurs.
In September, our favourite celebrated gin distillery Jim & Tonic announced the launch of its first ever rum distillery, The Rum House, in Dane’s Yard. The Rum House has already played host to some exciting events this year and, when it launches fully to the public in 2024, it’s set to feature a state-of-the-art distillery, new rooftop bar and private event space. Cheers to the next step in its exciting journey on the Island!
In December, the Island got a festive makeover with a month-long programme of events including a skating rink, creative workshops and a long-weekend full of live music and entertainment . Events included Christmas card, candle and ornament making workshops, a ‘sip and paint’ mural drop in workshop, art and fashion pop-ups, free food and drink and great live performances.
A massive thank you to all the businesses, residents, and visitors to the Island for being part of and helping to grow our wonderful community here on Sugar House Island. We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
