BUILT BY WE: A CELEBRATION OF CARIBBEAN SPACES IN NEWHAM
As part of Newham Heritage Month 2025, Sugar House Island came alive on Saturday 20 September for Built By We. A vibrant day of creativity, connection and celebration exploring the rich heritage of Caribbean community spaces.
Hosted by Cold Islanders, the event invited guests to reflect on the places that have shaped Caribbean life — from verandas and barbershops to dancehalls, kitchens and churches.
Throughout the day, visitors joined in a hands-on textile workshop led by designer Kris Thomas, creating embroidered patches inspired by memories and rituals of home.
