IWG’S ‘SPACES’ IS COMING TO SUGAR HOUSE ISLAND
International Workplace Group (IWG), the world’s leading flexible workspace provider, has signed to take 21,364 sq ft for its Spaces brand here at Sugar House Island.
IWG will take space in The Type Building, a CAT A office building at Chimney Walk, the largest and latest phase of commercial development on the Island.
The signing marks the latest milestone in the Island’s strategy for a mixed-use neighbourhood with a particular focus on curating a dynamic mix of business and learning. In 2024 Chimney Walk was awarded dual use status on two of its buildings, allowing both office and education occupiers to operate within the same space.
IWG Spaces, aimed at providing inspiring, hybrid workspace for creative businesses and entrepreneurs, will join the University of Huddersfield’s first London-based campus at Chimney Walk. Other businesses and education providers on the Island include School 360 for primary education, IATE, The Talent House, Phaidon Publishers and Sophia Webster.
Michael Cronin, Head of Portfolio at Vastint UK, said: “Welcoming a globally leading brand such as IWG to the Island marks an important step in the growth of our thriving community, where business of all sizes can flourish. Central to our vision for Sugar House Island has been to create a neighbourhood where a variety of businesses, makers and learners could not only co-exist, but could support each other. Over the last five years this vision has become a reality. From our residents that have been able to open new amenity businesses on the Island, to School 360 where the children learn to grow the herbs that are used by Jim & Tonic.
IWG’s presence will usher in a new dynamic business community and we’re excited to work with them to help them make their mark. We’re also pleased to strengthen our relationship with IWG, having welcomed them to our destinations across Europe, and look forward to working with them in Stratford.”
Across five decades, IWG has revolutionised the way business approaches its workplaces. This new location for the group is part of a drive to meet the sharply rising demand for top class flexible working space. Work on the fit-out will begin in March.
Mark Dixon, CEO and Founder of IWG, said: “With latest figures showing that hybrid working is the standard pattern for a quarter of workers, we understand that the office should be a place people want to be, not just somewhere they have to be. Therefore, creating high-quality, inspiring spaces in well-connected and vibrant locations is key.
“The idea of employees all commuting to a big head office is a notion from the past – what businesses now require are hubs, so they can work close to home when they aren’t working from home. With its abundant public spaces, convenient amenities, and exceptional transport links, our new site at Sugar House Island will serve as an excellent hub for east London businesses.”
