We’re delighted to reveal that the Sugar House Island Primary school has now ‘topped out’ marking an important milestone in its construction. The term ‘topping out’ refers to the placing of the last piece of structure on a building, and is often a celebration of progress.
Richard Lam, Construction Manager for Vastint UK said “We are very pleased to have reached this milestone with our delivery partners Mid-group, and their specialist contractor, O’Keefe. This has been achieved with speed and in a very safe manner in a confined site with residents and businesses in operation. The design team has worked in collaboration with Big Education Trust, the DfE and their technical advisors to make the design a reality and a landmark building is beginning to emerge from the ground.”
With construction progressing well, the new two-form entry Primary School is due to open its doors to children in September 2021, and will be operated by Big Education Trust. This new Primary School will be Big Education Trusts’ second school in the area, following the success of School 21 in Pitchford Street, Stratford; an Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ rated school that teaches students aged four to eighteen.
The Sugar House Island primary school will have a capacity for 440 pupils, and will offer high quality teaching following the ‘Head, Heart and Hands’ teaching pedagogy. The school will feature a roof top play space including a multi-use games area and external teaching area. Key features of the build include oracy stairs, break out spaces, flexible classroom teaching spaces, musical walk play-area, green outdoor classroom and a Forest School for outdoor teaching.
